Steve-- thanks for your comment. I will clarify in another post but yes absolutely the ICC is by definition political. Law, in general is, if only in terms of sovereignty and power over the body. However the crossroads that intrigues me is about what kind of political role the ICC carves out for itself. And how much future agency or relevancy it might have, depending on its choices now.

Absolutely advocacy is politics. In terms of the advocacy I mean-- I am referring to the ICC acting like an NGO in calling for states to prosecute a variety of crimes not in the Statute as a matter of justice advocacy--much like say, the role of ICTJ.

I wish you'ld clarify your objection to the court's involvement in politics. Its task is to try those accused of major responsibility for serious international crimes. By the nature of the accusation, the accused will always be military or political leaders.
That means that the court's activities are inextricably involved with international politics. From it's creation the court was a political actor.

Nice post !
When i think of the ICC doing its own advocacy, as opposed to civil society actors like CICC, i think of its victims outreach program. but i get the sense from your post that you're talking about advocacy in terms of playing politics with states parties. am i out to lunch on that?
certainly advocacy is politics ;)
